Bangalore is one of the fastest growing cities in India. It is seen that most of the shopping complexes, malls and high rise buildings do lack safety measures and the occupants of such building are unaware of the topography of the building and the exit outlets in case of an emergency. Due to this, these exit outlets are blocked with junk furniture or locked by some-one keeping others in dark making these outlets unavailable at times of necessity. The resultant effect is that in case of fire accident, the loss of life and property will be high. The fire accident in Uphar Theatre, in Green Park area of New Delhi and in Carlton Tower in HAL Airport Road, Bangalore could be an eye opener for all concerned.
It would be proper for the Fire Safety Officials and other concerned Governmental authorities to visit these commercial and high rise buildings periodically to verify whether these buildings are protected against fire accidents to save men and materials and in case of emergency whether people could be moved out of the buildings at ease. Periodical reports of defaulters also may be published in the web sites of these departments.
Further, the number of Fire Stations and Fire Brigades in the city require to be increased considerably to match with the rise in the commercial and high rise buildings.
Feasibility of providing one fully equipped fire station in each locality may also be considered instead of housing them in only certain strategic points so that incidents of fire accidents could be attended without loss of time and also to avert delay in reaching the accident spot due to traffic jam.
