SAFETY IN HIGH RISE BUILDINGS
Bangalore city is witnessing vertical growth due to real estate boom in the past decades. The billion dollar question is whether these high rise buildings are constructed as per the rules and regulations laid down by the National Building Code of India ?

Bangaloreans can never forget the Calton Tower fire tragedy on February 23, 2010 on the old Airport Road, in which nine people lost their lives and more than 50 were injured. Three people virtually jumped to their death in a bid to escape from the fire, the visuals caught on the cell phones were telecast by almost all TV channels. The rescue operation was delayed due to heavy evening traffic and crowding of onlookers. But, for the timely medical treatment by the doctors and staff of the multispecialty hospital on the same road the fatalities could have gone higher.
Recently on April 6, 2013, in Thane, Maharashtra, a seven storeyed apartment building collapsed in which 74 people lost their lives which included 25 kids and more than 62 were injured. It is strange that the seven storeyed building was constructed illegally within two months time. How can a seven storeyed building be constructed unnoticed without the active connivance of the concerned authorities. It was reported in the national newspapers that there are hundreds of such illegally constructed high rise buildings in Maharashtra itself, which is quite shocking.
The above unfortunate tragic incidents make it clear that the high rise buildings are not constructed as per the standard rules and regulations set out in the statute books. The law enforcement officers are hand in glove with the greedy builders whose only aim is making enormous profits even at the cost of human tragedies.
In Bangalore city, there are nearly 38 tall buildings and another 50 high rise buildings are under construction. As per the mandatory rules these high rise buildings must have a separate fire exit staircase, have easy egress to the occupants in case fire mishap, stuffiest open space connected with at least two broad roads for entry of Fire tenders. There are many other statutory requirements for constructing high rise buildings, which are not complied with by the builders.
The concerned authorities must strictly ensure that all safety measures are taken care of while granting licence for building of such high rise buildings whether commercial or residential, to make such buildings safe for the occupants. The security staff and the occupants of such high rise buildings must be trained well to deal with emergency situations.
